Are there any other surviving corvettes to be found ?? |

OK so we all know about HMCS Sackville, the last surviving Flower, as far as we know, but is there any scope for another survivor out there and where should we be looking ? If I had to pick locations for potential survivors I would be looking at Japan, South America and perhaps Africa, anyone got any other hunches ? Given that some have been scrapped as recently as the 1980s they clearly have longevity of use on their side, so there may just be one still floating out there or hauled up in some yard. If so, then maybe we should be trying to get to it first before the scrapyard does ? I'm just thinking out loud here as it has always been a dream to locate one and get it back to the UK somehow for a restoration project as a memorial. Sounds crazy I know - but stranger things have happened at sea !

Sifting the net I have found another one already. It appears to be the hull and deck of a former HMCS Flower, but no idea which one. You can see pictures on this website www.transportation.bcit.c...Arthur.htm If you read the short text on the website the hull just appears to be in transit and may have already been cut up. I tried to get in touch with the company but their email link does not work.

The fomer corvette HMCS SUDBURY served on the west coast as a large tug named Sudbury for many years after the Second World War.
Perhaps King Arthur is the former Sudbury? |

Neither the email address or tel number listed on the site works. I have a friend who lives in Vancouver who is trying to track down a working phone line for the Maritime Historical Society.

Dave - great that you are trying to chase that one up over there. It would be nice to get there before she is broken up and at least get a thorough set of photographs all round that ship, there may well be a fair amount intact below deck even though it does not look promising in the web pics.

looks to me like the Kyo Maru No. 1, being pursued around the southern pacific by Greenpeace, is a former flower corvette...possibly one of several which are on my list as being Kyo Maru No. 16 thru 23. I had sent an email to the Japanese IRC with an inquiry about the ship, but to date, have received no response. Dave |

She is certainly a possibility judging by the hull shape alone, heavily converted though. I wonder if there is a modern shipping list which details the origins of the current whaling fleet ? The Japanese and Chinese fleets are probably the most likely sources of a survivor now. I chased up HMS Mallow with the Alexandria port authorities and sadly found she had been scrapped as recently as 1985, she was practically intact with her late war fittings.

Mark: what rotten luck to get so close to a ship and then find out it has just been scrapped...
I understand that Lloyd's Register can be used to trace ships but in this darn electronic world, you cannot see it at the Library anymore...everything is "on-line!" Perhaps someone in this list has access? Dave |

Hey wow, I just got this response:
Dear Mr. David XXXXXXXX, Concerning your inquiry on the above, Kyo-Maru No. 1 was built in 1971 in Japan, therefore, she is not the one you thought. Best regards, Konomu Kubo Japan Whaling Association |

SEADOG wrote:I wonder how much it would cost to build one to day................just throughing out thereSeadog - Welcome to the Forums! It would cost too much I am afraid! It is difficult enough finding the money to preserve original WWII ships so building a new one would be out of the question. Cli0019 - Well done getting a reply from the Japan Whaling Association, a pity it wasn't the ship you expected. Keep trying! |
