Revell corvette questions (early or late Flower?)

First, does the model represent a regular early Flower, or the later Flower with the increased sheer and bow rake? Second, can either Snowflake, Sunflower, Pink or Loosestrife be built from it? That would depend, of course, on whether they were early or later Flowers and which configuration the model represents. I believe Pink was a later Flower based on a caption in a book I read, and possibly Snowflake based upon her completion date and a broadside photo of her that might show that additional sheer, but I'm not sure. After reading Michael Gannon's Black May, I want to build one of the corvettes from ONS 5. Thank you for any help or guidance. Sincerely, Robert Morgan

As has been mentioned on several sites including this one there are compromises but that is to be expected on a class of ships that had refits as new advances come along, if no compromises must model kits would never make it into production. I have two kits that I need start building but I'm still working out which ships I want to model, I've also thought about modeling one of the corvettes from ONS 5 after reading Black May. Posts: 50 (29/12/08 04:28:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	If by late you mean the Modified, Extended Endurance corvette produced later in the war, then the Revell model is of the earlier vessel. The early vessels had the fore castle extended aft and, at first glance, resemble the later Modified veesl. One of the main distinguishing features is that the early Flowers had a rake to their funnels. This was not changed during modifications. The Modified, Extended Endurance vessels had a straight up and down vertical funnel. This was incorporated into the design because the subs would use the rake of the funnel to judge course and speed. It was built in Canada for the RN but upon completion it and 9 others (also built in Canada) were turned over for operational control by the RCN. It was originally built as a short forecastle without the shear and flare of the later corvettes and later had the forecastle extended. The Revell model is of the later configuration, ie extended forecastle. These ten corvettes were built to RN specs rather than RCN specs so it you are doing a RN corvette you will not have to de-Canadianize it. Corvette publications normally have a listing of the ships in the various batches and most recently "Flower Class Corvettes" was published by Shipcraft (Seaforth Publishing).

I was able to find the anwer to the revised Flower listing in the Ensign book on the Flowers. It turns there were about eleven RN Flowers plus many Canadian Flowers built with the revised rake and sheer, and Pink and Snowflake were among them. Suddenly, Snowflake's higher bridge and four inch mounting make sense - they had to raise most everything from forecastle to bridge by about one deck to allow the gun to fire directly forward over the increased bow rake and sheer, and the bridge crew had to be able to observe everthing. Modifying the Revell Flower's hull to the revised hull looks daunting, and would probably require an entirely new hull altogether, such are the plating differences, lines differences, and so on. So, it looks like Loosestrife is the most probable candidate if I follow through and do an ONS 5 Flower. I've been stockpiling the Great Little Ships parts over the past year in preparation for this project. I hope to get her done by summer. Then again, at the glacial pace that I build... Thanks again.
