Pennant: K108 Built by: John Crown & Sons Ltd. (Sunderland, UK) : Clark Ordered: 15 Dec, 1939 Laid down: 16 Sep, 1940 Launched: 20 Jun, 1941 Commissioned: 7 Jul, 1941 Sold on 20 April 1947 and scrapped at Newport. Image below shows Campion in 1941 
The images below show Campion in October 1942 after refit

The copyright of the original photographer for the following images is unknown. The photos were supplied by Geoff Drummond who was the Chief Bosun's Mate
or "Buffer" on Campion between 1942 and March 1944. He joined the ship as a Leading Seaman in 1941.

The following images were supplied by Denis Dillerstone whose father served on HMS Campion. The images pre-date the late 1942 refit. Dillerstone 
The following three crew photos were kindly supplied by Barbara Hall whose father, Leslie Brown, served on HMS Campion from 9/8/41 as an Engine Room Artificer 4, until 12/2/42. Again, these images appear to date to sometime before the late 1942 refit of the ship.

Hello Mark
I have just discovered this site and I was pleased to see a picture of my father,Henry Dillerstone,on the Campion.As far as I know he was a Leading Seaman, joined the ship from new and stayed on her throughout the war.He didn't talk too much about the war but he did tell me some of his experience of the 'Nightmare Convoy' to Malta in,I think,1942.My father died in 1991 aged 83 and I have several pictures of him on the Campion during the war.I dot know any names of his shipmates but I would be happy to send the pictures if you are interested |

Wonderful pictures, its not often that you get to see images from all sides of a ship, espcially ships of this era:)

Hi Denis and Casiterite and welcome to the forums !
Denis - I would be very interested in seeing copies of your fathers photos. My stepfather, Ron Jones, was a Leading Seaman ASDIC operator on Campion between mid 42 and 1945. Sadly he passed away last October and it would be great to see if he is amongst your father's photos. If you can email good large sized scanned copies of the photos that would be excellent. Casiterite - Campions colours were dark greyish-blue and white in most of the photos below c.1941-42. After refit at Hull in 1942 ready for the Liverpool to Mediterranean convoys she had a Western Approaches light blue, light green and white camouflage applied. All the best Mark |

Hi Mark, thank you for posting these great pictures.
I'm currently building a flower class model and was looking for one to replicate. I really like her camouflage and shes a north east built ship so that ticks 2 of the boxes, the last being plenty of quality photographs which you have very kindly shared. I do have one question though. You mention that after her refit in 42 she sported a WA blue, green and white scheme. Do you believe the pictures above show her in that scheme, the dark areas appear to be rather darker than WA blue? Or was she all WA-B with the dark areas being WA-G? Again would the green show up that dark? Also if you have any more information on her Id love to hear it and if you had nay larger version of the 6 pictures showering her after her refit I'd love to get hold of them. Thanks Phil |

Hi Phil
Sorry for the late reply. Work and other interests seem to be competing with my Flower Class research time rather more than I would like of late. I think my original info. on the WA blue/green/white camo scheme after refit may have been wrong, particularly as Campion was heading out for Mediterranean operations at this time. Comparing this exact scheme as used on other corvettes in late 42 I think the dark areas are 507a, areas between the dark patches are 507c and the superstructure on the deck is MS4a. Hydrangea and Armeria have exactly the same scheme in late 42. I have assumed you are familiar with the paint chip numbers, let me know if not. Phil - let me have your email address if you want larger scanned images of the late 42 photos. Not sure what info. to send on Campion as I have quite a lot and it would take ages to copy. Is there anything specific you wanted to know ? Regards Mark |
