The British merchant Empire Stanley is torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-197 south-southeast of Cap Sainte Marie, Madagascar in position 27.08S, 48.15E. The British corvette HMS Thyme (Lt. H. Roach) picks up 9 survivors and landed them at Durban on 29 August.
Sold in 1947. Became the weather ship Weather Explorer. In 1958 she became the merchant ship Epos.
